Trudy sat between Gavin and Rachel in the front row of the Marquee Theater. She felt grungy, having been at a desert cookout just an hour before. She waved off the cocktail waitress, who was wearing far too little, only to see her father leering at her.

“Some things never change,” she grumbled to her husband.

“Look at Holly,” Gavin said. “She’ll keep him in line.”

Sure enough, Holly rammed one of her bony elbows into her father’s side, and Trudy saw him visibly wince.

“Holly’s starting to grow on me,” Trudy said, “but not enough to call her Mom or anything.”

Her father went back to texting on his phone, which she hoped wouldn’t continue throughout the performance. Whatever the nature of that earlier call, it put him in a sour mood—which reminded her…

She leaned over and whispered to Rachel, “How are you doing?”

“I don’t like this.”

“What’s the deal lately? You seem a lot more stressed than the happy-go-lucky angel I remember from Creekside.”

Rachel was adamant. “I’m sorry, but this isn’t right. We shouldn’t be here. We shouldn’t be entertained by fallen ones. We shouldn’t be spectators to evil.”

“You’re hanging around my father now. He seems to attract evil.”

“He’s your father, and I respect that, but he makes me so angry sometimes.”

“Angels get angry?”

“Of course, silly. Anytime we see humans hurting other humans, we become angry.”

“You must be furious in Vegas.”

Rachel had to smile. “The last thing Las Vegas needs is someone like Ahti spewing lies to gullible humans.”

Trudy was about to say that Ahti’s magic act probably posed no threat to humankind other than boredom, when the lights went down and an overly enthusiastic announcer blasted out a plethora of words that should have been skipped except for the “Here’s the Amazing Ahti” at the end.
