Trudy sat between Gavin and Rachel in the front row of the Marquee Theater. She felt grungy, having been at a desert cookout just an hour before. She waved off the cocktail waitress, who was wearing far too little, only to see her father leering at her.
âSome things never change,â she grumbled to her husband.
âLook at Holly,â Gavin said. âSheâll keep him in line.â
Sure enough, Holly rammed one of her bony elbows into her fatherâs side, and Trudy saw him visibly wince.
âHollyâs starting to grow on me,â Trudy said, âbut not enough to call her Mom or anything.â
Her father went back to texting on his phone, which she hoped wouldnât continue throughout the performance. Whatever the nature of that earlier call, it put him in a sour moodâwhich reminded herâ¦
She leaned over and whispered to Rachel, âHow are you doing?â
âI donât like this.â
âWhatâs the deal lately? You seem a lot more stressed than the happy-go-lucky angel I remember from Creekside.â
Rachel was adamant. âIâm sorry, but this isnât right. We shouldnât be here. We shouldnât be entertained by fallen ones. We shouldnât be spectators to evil.â
âYouâre hanging around my father now. He seems to attract evil.â
âHeâs your father, and I respect that, but he makes me so angry sometimes.â
âAngels get angry?â
âOf course, silly. Anytime we see humans hurting other humans, we become angry.â
âYou must be furious in Vegas.â
Rachel had to smile. âThe last thing Las Vegas needs is someone like Ahti spewing lies to gullible humans.â
Trudy was about to say that Ahtiâs magic act probably posed no threat to humankind other than boredom, when the lights went down and an overly enthusiastic announcer blasted out a plethora of words that should have been skipped except for the âHereâs the Amazing Ahtiâ at the end.
